Truck Driver Requirements in Washington

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, truck driving ranks among the top 20 most sought-after professions in the country. With the steady increase in demand for reliable, trained, and certified truck drivers, it’s not surprising that truck driving professionals in Washington today command great employee packages and enjoy numerous work benefits. There is no shortage of men and women who want to jump onto the bandwagon. But according to truck driver requirements, Washington individuals must obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) before they can get behind the wheels of a truck. There are different categories of licenses to be applied for driving vehicles belonging to the following classes—A, B, or C.

According to the truck driver requirements, Washington CDL-hopefuls must be at least 18-years-old and have a valid driver’s license issued by the Washington Department of Motor Vehicles before they can apply for a commercial license. Those who wish to drive inter-state vehicles must be at least 21 years of age. Also, according to truck driver requirements, Washington CDL applicants must take a vision test and pass a medical examination.

The CDL test comprises a written examination and an on-road test. According to truck driver requirements, a CDL examinee must take his driving test on board only that class of vehicle for which he wants to obtain a specific license.

CDL applicants in Washington must fulfill some other truck driver requirements. Washington applicants, for instance, must obtain additional endorsements if they wish to drive a tanker truck, a vehicle with air brakes, passenger vehicles that can carry more than 16 people, and trucks with double or triple trailers. There are separate endorsements for transporting hazardous materials and as per truck driver requirements, Washington drivers must also agree to go through a background screening test by the Transport Security Administration (TSA).
